HASHAM KAMRAN

Amidst the ongoing opioid-related overdose crisis, the Uniter Conservative Party (UCP) in Alberta decided to shut down the busiest safe consumption site in North America.

This article published in a US based Harm Reduction journal, 2nd year MPH student and Calgarian Hasham Kamran looks at the devastating impacts of UCP’s decision and other decisions made by them to hurt people who use drugs (PWUD). PWUD are going through three crises at the same time – COVID-19, Overdose and the Housing crisis – and more must be done to support them.

OMOBOLADE OSINOWO

My name is Omobolade Osinowo, I am a first year MPH student, currently joining the program from Abuja, the Capital city of Nigeria. I am passionate about Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health, improving access to high-quality care and eliminating structural inequities. My interest in Public Health lies strongly in the fact that it guides the development of interventions that can preserve lives and populations. It is crystal clear that Public Health is fundamental and indispensable for development, reducing morbidities and mortalities. My key learning so far in this course is the global experience from the COVID - 19 pandemic which has largely demonstrated that primordial and primary prevention stands tall above secondary and tertiary levels of prevention.

Best wishes,

Omobolade Osinowo (Pronouns: she/her/hers)

CHAE RIM LEE

As the days are getting shorter and the cold temperatures seep through my bones I find myself slipping into my yearly seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression during the fall and winter months that causes fatigue, prolonged sadness, sleep problems, and lack of focus (CAMH, 2020). I became worried about the potential exacerbation of my SAD symptoms by the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to search for coping strategies that may be more impactful than my chewable vitamin D tablets and my ten-dollar sunrise alarm clock from Craigslist. Here is a compilation of some practical strategies based on a casual Google search that don’t require you to shell $52.99 on a lamp...
